How to find University Spinouts

Find companies which have spun out of Universities or other Academic Institutions, and specify by University/Region and date of spinout

Updated over a week ago

Why Spinouts?

If a company was set up to exploit intellectual property developed by a recognised UK university, then we'll class them as an Academic Spinout.

This can be a great indication of future innovation and investment, since these companies will already have a strong foundation of academic expertise and access to University support networks.

Spinouts are such a valuable part of the UK's Innovation ecosystem that we put together an annual 'Spotlight on Spinouts' report to analyse key trends in growth and investment. You can read these reports yourself via our Reports page on our website.

We have created profiles for all companies that were deemed to have spun out on or after 1st January 2011. You can see our full definition and methodology in our FAQs section on Academics Spinouts here.

Want to find these companies yourself? Below is a short video showing you how:

Finding Spinouts

To find via the Advanced Search, head to 'Add company criteria' -> 'Significant events' -> 'Was spun out of an academic institution where'. From here you can click:

  • 'Add with no additional criteria' to find ANY spinout

  • 'Name of academic institution' to find a given University's fill spinout portfolio

  • 'Location' to find all spinouts in a given region/area from any University

To filter by the date the spinout occurred we can use the fact that a company's Incorporation Date is by definition their date of spinout:

Click 'Add company criteria' -> 'Significant events' -> 'Incorporation date':

Finding more spinouts

We are always open to collaborating with Universities to ensure we fully track all of their Spinout activity, to assist with impact reporting and HEBCI returns. For more information, please get in touch with your Account Manager who will be happy to assist!
