Identifying companies that are developing unique innovative technologies isn’t always easy, especially in crowded markets.

Spotting the industries that are pushing innovation can help you get ahead of the competition.

Being the first to spot those at risk due to lack of IP protection, or others with international ambitions early, will allow you to further filter and highlight the most relevant companies and trends, keeping you in the driver’s seat.

The Advanced Search tool includes two levels of filtering for patents:

  • Firstly, companies that have an associated patent

  • Second, going into depth on the patent title, classification, and authorities

Basic filtering

To quickly identify research-intensive companies that own patented technologies, head to Advanced Search and select Add company criteria.

Open the Significant Events section. Here, you’ll find the search field Has an associated patent.

Select True to focus on companies that have been granted a patent.

Advanced filtering

To find companies with patents filed in a specific technology area or patent authority, head to Advanced Search, select Add company criteria -> Significant events -> Patents granted where.

From here, you can add any of the following criteria:

Patent Title

You can filter for companies innovating in a specific field by entering a set of keywords into the Title field

Patent Classification

The Classification criteria provides a range of broader technology fields, including Physics, Electricity and Mechanical Engineering

Authorities

Filter by Authorities to find companies with a research presence in a specific geographical area
