How to search using Industries and Buzzwords

Using our industry and buzzword classification across ALL UK companies

Updated over 3 months ago

Our Industries and Buzzwords dataset combines 225 industries and 80 buzzwords into a single, unified classification covering more than 4.6m UK private companies in everything from AgriTech to Digital Security.

It's the best way to map an entire sector without having to rely on SIC Codes, or identify companies operating in niche overlaps of key industries, e.g. Medical Device companies which leverage Artificial Intelligence in their products, or Software companies servicing the Education sector.

Below are three examples of how to leverage this dataset:

Search 1: Mapping an entire sector

Finding all Life Science companies in the Golden Triangle

Head to the Advanced Search, then click 'Add company criteria' -> 'What the company does' -> 'Industries and buzzwords' to open up our sector matrix:

Use our Industry groupings in the left column to select all of our Life science & medical technology tags, then click 'Confirm':

Layer in any additional criteria (Location, size, fundraisings etc) to refine the list as desired, then click 'Search for companies' to capture the full sector ecosystem:

Search 2: Industry overlap searches

Finding companies in Life Sciences AND Software:

We tag companies with as many industries as are relevant, which allows us to find companies in the overlap of broad sector areas. To do this, simply layer in 'Industries and Buzzwords' a second time:

In the first section select a broad range of Life Science sectors, then in the second select a range of Software sectors:

This will then return any company tagged with ANY of the Life Sci sectors, AND ANY of the Software sectors.

Search 3: Exclusion searches

Finding companies in a given sector, and excluding any businesses that overlap with an undesirable industry:

This process is identical to Search 2, but when layering in Industries and Buzzwords a second time, change the 'Any' drop-down to 'None':

This will then only return companies which are tagged with ANY of the Life Science sectors, and which are NOT tagged with ANY of the Software sectors.

Methodology

We tag industries and buzzwords over all UK companies using a combination of manual and automated processes.

Industries define the space or field a company operates in and buzzwords are additional classifications not captured by standard industry tags, for example FinTech, Internet of Things, and Quantum.
