Understanding key terminology we use on the platform

Updated this week

The below is a long list of terms you'll see on the platform, and hear from you support team - here's what they mean!

Key Platform Functionality Terms

  • Advanced Search / AVS

    • Our most powerful tool, that lets you search for whatever you're looking for in the market, such as companies, funds, people or transactions.

    • You can use Advanced Search to layer on criteria to refine your search, save your results and export key data

  • Collections

    • Collections are the folders or groups that you can put companies, funds, people and transactions into.

    • They allow you to keep lists in one place, receive alerts and updates on them, export key information, and generate insights with tabs like statistics.

    • We recommend that when you build an Advanced Search, and you want to save the results, add them to a collection!

  • Tags

    • Tags allow you to label companies within a collection, and will show up on a company profile.

    • You can choose a colour, and type whatever you want in - eg. Reach out next week, or one to watch!

  • Export Credits

    • Export credits are how we ensure that people don't download our entire database!

    • Export credits only limit how much data you can export from the platform.

    • They work on a monthly basis so reset on the 1st of every month, and are shared across the whole subscription.

  • Review Mode

    • When you click on a company, fund or people profile, you enter "Review Mode", which allows you to flick through the profiles faster.

    • You can click the arrows at the top to jump from profile to profile, as well as export key data, add or remove tags, and add or remove the profile to a collection.

  • Explore

    • Explore allows you to search for key trends, players and top-level highlights within either an Industry, Buzzword, Location or Stage of Evolution of choice.

    • Explore only searches over high growth companies - see more on this later on where we talk about "Tracked" data.

  • My Network

    • My Network allows you to upload people that you know, so that you can spot their connections, to find warm introductions.

    • Read this article for more information on how you can do this!

  • Licence

    • All Beauhurst users will have their own licence, an account that they can access the platform from.

    • Each account must be under a single named individual’s Subscribing Organisation’s email address. Email addresses that are accessed by multiple people may not be used (for example [email protected])

Company Data

  • Industries

    • Our newest and best classification of what a company does, covering over 4.6 million UK companies, generated by our own machine learning algorithm, trained by our in house data team's vast experience and knowledge.

  • Buzzwords

    • A Beauhurst proprietary dataset that classifies companies in exciting, up-and-coming areas, manually assigned by our in-house data team.

      • For Example, Fintech, Artificial Intelligence (AI) or eHealth

  • Target Markets

    • A company's target markets are the audiences a company seeks to engage with. We have divided target markets into the following:

      • Consumers

      • Businesses

      • Public sector

      • Third sector

    • For more in depth information on target markets, see this article!

For more information on how we classify companies, see this article!

  • Stages of Evolution

    • This as an indicator of where a company is at in its life cycle - we classify companies like this rather than using Series A/B/C, which only relays the number of institutional rounds a company has completed.

    • The typical trajectory is as follows:

      • Seed > Venture > Growth > Established

      • Other companies may go on to further stages:

        • Exited - When a company is absorbed by another entity and no longer operates independently, normally via acquisition or reverse takeover.

        • Zombie - Heading towards administration or showing no signs or life.

        • Dead - The company has ceased all activity, or filed in such a manner that they are no longer trading.

      • For more information on how we choose Stages of Evolution, see this article.

  • Signals

    • We display signals on company profiles to help you see at a glance why a company may be interesting to you

    • They fall under the broad categories:

      • Growth, Innovation, Risk, Environmental, Social & Governance

    • For more information on why a company will receive a signal, see this article.

  • Announced / Unannounced Fundraisings

    • Companies may choose to disclose publicly that they've received funding - most later-stage companies will make an announcement to the press, LinkedIn or similar about the funding they've secured.
      We call these "Announced fundraisings".

    • Often, when receiving funding early in their lifecycle, a company will choose not to announce this to the press.
      We call these "Unannounced fundraisings".

    • Across 2024, 60% of all fundraisings into UK companies went unannounced to the press, totalling £4.78B (accurate as of July 2025)

    • For more information on how we find unannounced fundraisings, see this article.

  • IPO

    • Initial Public Offering, where a company lists on a public stock exchange. IPOs can also be referred to as either 'listing' or 'floating' on the public market.

    • This is one of our growth signals, and is often only achieved by large, household name companies, who are hoping to raise capital with new investors.

  • Academic Spinout

    • An academic spinout is a company formed to exploit IP developed or licences by a UK university.
These are often highly innovative companies, that attract a lot of attention early in their lifecycle.

    • For in-depth information on how we classify an academic spinout, see this article.

  • High-Growth Lists

    • A list that validate the ambition and growth prospects of featured companies.
Companies that feature on these often are growing quickly, and/or are highly innovative.

    • For in-depth information on which high-growth lists we deem eligible, see this article.

People data

  • Company Position

    • The role that the individual holds at the organisation, eg. Chief Executive Officer, or Head of Marketing

  • Job function

    • A broader term to summarise the department that the individual sits within and their focus, eg. Strategy, Marketing or Sales

    • Not all job titles will be given a function, for example if they're unique or ambiguous.
