Industries & Buzzwords
We classify by using a proprietary taxonomy far more granular, relevant and up to date than SIC codes, which uses over 300 different classifications.
Our taxonomy data is divided into industries & buzzwords; we tag industries and buzzwords over all UK, German & Irish companies using a combination of manual and automated processes, covering millions of companies. Those industries that have gone through an automated process are generated on a weekly basis. Over 6 million companies are tagged with industries.
Industries define the space or field a company operates in and buzzwords are additional classifications not captured by standard industry tags, for example FinTech, Internet of Things, and Quantum.
Industrial Strategy 8 High Growth Sectors
We also tag relevant companies against the government's Industrial Strategy 8 High Growth Sectors (IS-8).
As part of its Industrial Strategy (Invest 2035), the UK Government has identified eight sectors where it sees the greatest opportunity for the UK to lead. These sectors are the focus of a more proactive industrial strategy going forward, and the British Business Bank uses our classifications in place of SIC codes for its own IS-8 reporting to government.
