Whilst there is no perfect flag for companies who have links to other countries, there are many ways we can build a picture around this.

Corporate Structure - Finding foreign parents or subsidiaries

A key indicator is whether a company is part of a larger corporate structure, whereby the top company (or "ultimate parent") is not UK-based.

We also have the ability to search for companies where they have a company in line to the ultimate parent who is not UK-based.

In the same manner, we can search over subsidiaries, or go broader still, any find UK companies where any company in the corporate structure is not UK-based.

People Data - Foreign Founder, Director or Majority Shareholder

In order to run these searches, you'll need our Networks feature! Reach out to you support team to learn more.

Spotting companies where the key people involved are not from the UK is often a go-to search for clients.

We can also search over their usual country of residence, should they be filing this as a company director to Companies House.

Filing Patents Abroad

In order to run these searches, you'll need our Patents feature! Reach out to you support team to learn more.

Particularly innovative companies who are looking to move into international markets will file patents in authorities other than the UK, such at the US or European Union.

Companies receiving Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) // Investment for international expansion

Companies that are receiving funding from funds not based in the UK, in conjunction with other aforementioned signals, often have a greater international presence.

Sometimes, we spot that companies have raised funding explicitly to fuel international expansion, which we tag with a deal purpose:

Companies that are regularly exporting or importing

Companies that are regularly importing or exporting commodities are naturally more in touch with the international market, and therefore will be more likely to go on to, or continue to, expand internationally.

Companies mentioned in the news alluding to international expansion

News articles can help pick up on the key events like transactions, as well as the more subtle signals, such as strategy shifts, new markets being approached, or change in focal points for the organisation.
