How to use Advanced Search to look at the employee count / headcount of a company, and how it has changed over time

Introduction

Often, it's important to find companies of certain sizes, particularly if they're not filing full financials (eg. turnover).
Further, it can be vital to know how a company's headcount has changed over time - whether they are on a growth trajectory, stagnating or declining.

Here's how you can use Beauhurst's 2 different employee count fields find companies based upon their headcount, and how it's changed.

Video outlining how you can build these searches yourself!

This video touches on finding companies of a certain size, using 'at least', 'at most' and 'between', as well as how to search over a change in headcount, such as an 'absolute increase of X' or a 'percentage increase of X%'.

Differences and Use Cases

Normally, the financial headcount will be the best way to find companies of a certain size, as you can specify exact numbers and be more precise, as well as being the only way we can find companies growing in headcount.

This comes from Companies House, and is filed every year by all companies.

The LinkedIn headcount can be beneficial for finding how large a company is, even if they haven't filed their financials recently, or at all.

One of the key differences is that this is a range, eg. 10-24, which limits how precise you can be with your searching. Equally, this means that you cannot search over the change in this metric either.
Another key difference is that this will be only found for high-growth companies (around 50,000 companies), as opposed to all UK companies.

This is self-reported by people on LinkedIn, so the accuracy of this can be harder to verify.

Therefore, we would recommend:

  • Use Financial headcount to search for companies of exact sizes, eg. find me companies with between 15 and 30 employees

  • Use Financial headcount to search for the change in headcount, eg. find me all companies reporting at least a 15% growth in headcount compared to their previous financial statement

  • Use LinkedIn headcount to search for high-growth, early-stage companies who are yet to file their full financials. eg. find me companies with roughly 10-24 people
